The process of obtaining a CPR number

Moving to another country involves paperwork that will allow you to pay taxes and enjoy employee benefits in your new place of residence. In Denmark, there is a unique identification number, CPR (Det Centrale Personregister). Without this number, access to many services in Denmark would be severely limited or even impossible.

CPR number: Why is it so important?

In Denmark, the CPR (Det Centrale Personregister) serves as the main registration number. It is a key element in confirming the identity of every person living in the country. The number is indispensable in everyday life, as it serves various institutions, both public and private.

Repeatedly required in dealing with government offices and financial institutions such as banks, the CPR plays a key role. Employers also use this number to accurately identify their employees. With this system, paperwork related to employment, taxes or access to public services can be completed quickly and securely.

The CPR number consists of 10 digits, the first 6 of which represent the date of birth - day, month and year. The remaining 4 digits are randomly generated, making each number unique.

How do you obtain a CPR number in Denmark?

Submitting an application is very convenient, as it can be done online, allowing you to quickly complete the paperwork without having to visit the office. For those without Internet access, municipal offices can be helpful, offering support in completing and submitting the application. Another option is to use the computers and Internet available at many local public libraries, where an application can also be submitted. The cost of processing the application is about DKK 82.

If your stay in Denmark is temporary, for example for seasonal work, a CPR number is not granted. In such cases, it is sufficient to obtain a kildeskattenummer - a withholding tax payer number. This number is linked to the employer's CPR in Denmark. To obtain this number, an application must be submitted to the tax office appropriate to the place of employment.

As of June 1, 2017, Copenhagen requires online application after obtaining a residence permit. After submitting your application, you must wait for information from the International Center for Foreigners in Copenhagen, which will inform you that you have been assigned a number. This number must be picked up in person. Those living outside the capital can apply at the Foreigners' Centers located in Odense, Aalborg and Aarhus.

When planning to come to Denmark with your family, it is worth remembering that each member of the family, even children, must apply individually for a CPR number. Each person needs his or her own number to take full advantage of available services and participate in society. You can get a CPR number at the earliest one month before you plan to start working in Denmark.

In order to apply for a CPR number, you must provide the relevant documents, which must be translated into one of the following languages: English, German, Danish, Swedish or Norwegian. Required documents include:

  • a residence permit certificate,
  • proof of residence in Denmark, such as a rental agreement,
  • an identity document, such as a passport or ID card,
  • proof of employment, such as an employment contract,
  • if applicable: marriage certificate, even if the spouse has remained in another EU country,
  • if applicable: divorce certificate or death certificate of the spouse,
  • birth certificates of children, if minor children have moved with a parent.

You will be assigned a tax identification number when you are issued a digital tax card, if you have not already received one. Once you receive it, you will find your number on your preliminary annual tax return. SKAT will forward your tax identification number to your employer via digital mail. This will allow your employer to access your tax number, which is crucial for the correct calculation and payment of advance income tax payments. The goal of this entire process is to simplify tax administration and ensure that all paperwork related to employment and tax obligations is handled in accordance with current regulations.

A CPR number is granted by SKAT in about 6-10 weeks after submitting full documentation. Once we receive it, we automatically become part of the Danish health insurance system, which entitles us to receive medical care. Shortly thereafter, we will have to select a doctor from a list provided by our municipality. With a CPR number, we can also proceed to set up a tax card.

It is worth noting that the process of applying for a CPR number is done only once in a lifetime. Once assigned, the tax identification number stays with you permanently, regardless of the number of times you return to Denmark. This means that even in the event of subsequent stays in this country or a change of residence, the CPR number will identify you at all times. If you have previously lived or worked in Denmark, the CPR number should already be assigned to you.

Procedure for obtaining a CPR number

A key step in the process of legally living and working in Denmark is residence registration, which is based on the rules that apply to European Union citizens. Failure to complete this registration will prevent you from fully exercising your rights and services as a resident. What's more, obtaining residency registration is essential for applying for a CPR-personnummer number, which is required for many formalities, such as opening a bank account or taking up employment.

As a citizen of an EU member state, you have the right to stay in Denmark for three months without registering your residency. If you plan to look for work during this time, there is an option to extend this period to 6 months. To take advantage of this option, you must apply for registration of your residency before the end of the allotted time. The application should be delivered to the appropriate Statsforvaltning office that serves your area of residence.

Preparing the appropriate documents is key before starting any formalities for residency in Denmark. Here are the necessary documents that will be required to complete the registration process and obtain the appropriate authorizations:

  • Residence permit - This document is issued by the relevant immigration authorities and may vary depending on the purpose of your stay, for example, whether it is for tourism, work or study.
  • Proof of residence in Denmark - To confirm that you have settled in Denmark, you will need to provide proof of residence.
  • Passport or ID card - The ID document must be valid for the entire period of your intended stay.

To obtain a CPR number, the first step is to register with the National Population Register, known in Denmark as Folkeregisteret. This registration is crucial, as it allows your personal information to be officially entered into the national registration system. Once this process is complete, you will automatically receive a CPR number, which is necessary for many formalities in Denmark.

Registering with Folkeregisteret not only grants you a CPR number, but also gives you access to the Danish health insurance system. With this insurance, you can receive full medical care in Denmark, which includes visits to doctors, hospital treatment and other health services. Without registering with the National Population Register, obtaining a CPR number and accessing health insurance would be impossible.

When we need to obtain a certificate on behalf of another person, it is necessary to present a written power of attorney. This document authorizes us to act on behalf of the person in question, which is crucial to ensure the correctness and legality of the entire procedure. For it to be recognized by the municipal authorities, the power of attorney must be drawn up in a formal manner.
